Sweden's World Cup Team Is Training in Frisco This Summer

Frisco is hosting a national soccer team during a FIFA World Cup for the first time, and it's turned Toyota Stadium into a genuine international storyline for the 2026 tournament. How Frisco got a team FIFA named Toyota Stadium, home of MLS club FC Dallas, as one of the official Team Base Camps for the 2026 World Cup. Base camps function as a national team's headquarters for the group stage. The squad trains on-site, uses the venue's recovery facilities, and stays nearby for several weeks. The assignment didn't come together until this spring. Toyota Stadium was set to host the winner of UEFA Playoff Path B, a four-team qualification bracket that included Poland, Albania, Sweden, and Ukraine. Sweden won that path and became Frisco's guest team, arriving in early June, according to FC Dallas and reporting from the Associated Press and The Athletic. Toyota Stadium has been temporarily renamed "Frisco Stadium" for FIFA branding purposes during the tournament, FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth reported. A local tie FC Dallas academy product Herman Johansson was named to Sweden's World Cup roster in May. A player who trained at the same Toyota Stadium complex is now competing for his home country in the tournament, according to FC Dallas. City officials hosted a community open training session and have been posting about Sweden's arrival on Frisco's official channels. City Hall's posts note the team is staying at the Westin Stonebriar Golf Resort & Spa during its time in North Texas. Fan access FIFA controls access to the training pitches during the tournament, but fans can catch partial views of practice from certain areas around the Toyota Stadium complex, especially during the cooler morning sessions teams tend to favor in North Texas summer heat. Frisco isn't hosting World Cup matches. Those are at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, rebranded "Dallas Stadium" for the tournament. It's hosting nine matches, including a semifinal, more than any other host city. Frisco is instead running a free, 34-day fan festival at Simpson Plaza in front of City Hall, organized with FC Dallas. It includes 97 live match viewings on giant screens over the course of the tournament, plus live music and local food and beverage vendors. Tickets are free but required. It's the local alternative to the official FIFA Fan Festival at Fair Park in Dallas. The World Cup runs through July 19. Frisco stays Sweden's home away from home until then.
